Catgirls

Why are catgirls such sex symbols in anime and manga? It seems like the majority of catgirls missed the personality department and went back to the body shop for another serving of sex appeal. These characters invariably speak childishly and add "nya" or "mew" at the end of each sentence.

They dress in clothing several sizes too small ...

...or simply forget to wear pants or button shirts.

They seem to only employ two types of facial expressions: pouty and whiney, or coy and sultry.  Guys fall all over themselves for these types of characters and adore their simple-mindedness combined with their exaggerated supermodel physiques.

Not all catgirls need to be like this. Ichigo from Tokyo Mew Mew dresses appropriately for her age and she is no more ditzy, feisty, and clueless than any other lead character in a magical girl show. It's one of the better catgirl animes out there. I tried to model Kira after these more kid-friendly characters. She is ditzy and spontaneous, but she is not brainless (some of these catgirls really have intellectual capacity below that of an actual feline). She dresses modestly, wearing pants under her skirt to avoid those oh-so-common panty shots that seem to be a staple of anime these days.

Given the fact that I invented her when I was 12 years old this is pretty understandable. I will definitely allow her to wear dresses and cute clothes, but I don't want her to be one of those sexed-up catgirl stereotypes.

She is earnest and, although she fights with her sister frequently, she adores Kaori and would do anything to protect her.

Kira is a flop with spells, but she has enough positive qualities to make up for this: she has high morals; she would bend over backwards to help a friend; she is full of determination; and she considers all sides of a story before making a decision.
